Telepresence is another word for videoconferencing, but was introduced in the market to differentiate systems that used high-definition (HD) video from those which did not. Perhaps also an important distinguishing characteristic of Telepresence systems is the "life-like" nature of the video experience. As the use of HD becomes commonplace, the distinction between telepresence and videoconferencing may disappear, but today a sharp contrast exists between traditional videoconferencing systems and Telepresence systems.
