ASCII / IA5

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) defines the characters that comprise the first 128 characters of the first octet of an 8-bit character. In RFC 3269 (UTF-8), these codes occupy a single octet when transmitted over the wire or stored in a file. ASCII was also adopted by the ITU as ITU-T Recommendation T.50 (International Alphabet No. 5, or IA5).
