Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1)

ASN.1 is an ITU standard that allows one to define messages and message contents to be exchanged betweeen communicating systems in a manner that is independent of the underlying encoding of the messages. The messages may be encoded using any number of message encoding rules, including Packed Encoding Rules (PER), Basic Encoding Rules (BER), and XML Encoding Rules (XER).
